Wherever you are in your journey, you are not alone.

Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community comes with unique joys, and also unique challenges.

Are you feeling unseen or unaccepted, invalid in your experience, or unsure of where to go for support? Maybe you’re navigating the difficulty of having friends and family who don’t fully accept you as you are. You could be facing discrimination at school or work. You might be unable to access the respectful and quality medical care you deserve. Perhaps you’re tired of being misgendered or hearing people misuse your pronouns.

You could be at the very beginning of your journey, still questioning who you are… or you could be further down your path and comfortable in your authentic self. Either way, you might be dealing with religious trauma, navigating a political climate that feels unsafe, or feeling misunderstood by other people in your life. Every day you’re faced with decisions about who to be honest with about your identity or what settings you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts in. These experiences might leave you feeling stressed and uncertain, and this can take a toll on you, your self-esteem, your relationships, and your sense of safety.

If this sounds familiar to you, you aren’t alone. It makes sense that you’re tired of carrying this burden alone and feel a longing for an affirming and non-judgmental space to navigate your feelings. And with the right support, you can experience feeling seen and safe, learn how to be more grounded within yourself, and feel more accepting of you and your identities.

MEET OUR THERAPISTS WHO SPECIALIZE IN LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

You’re not the only one going through this. What you’re feeling is more common than you think.

In the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s common to…

  • The feeling of deep isolation you might be experiencing is understandable and a sign of your innate humanity. Being alone while dealing with questions about identity, relationship problems, and concerns about your emotional well-being is difficult and can hurt a lot. But while your experience is unique to you, it’s not uncommon. Many individuals in the LGBTQ+ community face similar doubts, fears, and pain. Reaching out for help is a brave and meaningful step, not a sign of failure.

Research has consistently shown that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use. A recent report found that 67% of LGBTQ+ individuals needed mental health care in the past two years as opposed to 39% of non-LGBTQ+ individuals. While therapy has become more accepted amongst the general population, there are concerns that are unique to the LGBTQ+ community that leave these individuals with this identity carrying extra emotional burdens. Even within the LGBTQ+ community, some folx (like trans and non-binary humans) are at even greater risk of reporting depression or discrimination, and suicide attempts.

  • The disparity in mental health care isn’t a function of the identities people carry as members of the LGBTQ+ community, but the pain that comes from being constantly misunderstood, marginalized, invalidated, and silenced.

Another barrier often faced is access. Many people may want help, but find it too hard to find a culturally competent, affirming provider. Individuals may feel like their providers aren’t well-trained in gender and sexuality diversity, or feel like the space isn’t safe for them to continue self-exploration.

  • If you’re wondering whether you’re “the only one” feeling disconnected, unsupported, erased, or harmed… you aren’t alone. Unfortunately, these experiences are all too common, especially within the LGBTQ+ community.

You’re probably looking for some relief, some clarity, and a sense of belonging, and therapy can provide just that. With a therapist who is affirming of your identity, empathetic, and familiar with evidence-based practices, you can begin healing, reclaiming your confidence, and building a life that honors who you truly are.

Our approach

Therapy that helps you feel seen, heard, supported, and empowered.

Therapy with us is…

  • Many clients who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community come to therapy feeling misunderstood, tired of people rejecting their identity, and exhausted from facing systemic barriers. You’re probably tired of carrying this pain by yourself and maybe you’re unsure of where to turn for help that feels safe. At North Texas Family Therapy, our therapists are affirming of your identity and are here to meet you where you’re at and walk with you as you heal, grow, and reclaim your confidence.

  • Here, you’ll find a safe and welcoming space to explore what matters most to you… whether that’s processing experiences of discrimination, working through disconnection with your family or friends, exploring your gender identity or sexual orientation, or building healthier relationships where you feel supported - we’ve got you. We don’t assume that we know what you “should” be talking about in therapy. We let you guide the conversation, moving at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Our team uses a systemic and trauma-informed approach to acknowledge the impact that cultural, relational, and historical forces have had on your wellbeing. Depending on what you need, your therapist might integrate a variety of evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques and other skills to manage heightened emotions, somatic approaches to strengthen your body-mind connection, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to support you working through a traumatic event, and more. Together we will also explore your identity and values, giving you a space where you feel comfortable and authentic in your own skin, and hopefully helping you feel more confident in your everyday life.

  • Each session will look different, but some of the common themes could be self-exploration, skill-building, or support. We know that your experiences of discovering yourself are deeply personal topics, and we want to honor the space you are in, where you are coming from, and where you want to go. You’ll be working with a therapist who wants to collaborate with you, is affirming and culturally competent, and maybe most importantly, one who is there to listen to you and offer support that you need. Our therapists have specialized training in trauma and the LGBTQIA+ community. It might feel hard to see it now, but we have walked this path with many clients and witnessed real change… from feeling isolated and invalidated in their experience to feeling empowered, connected, and hopeful about the future. We believe change is possible because we have seen it.

  • If you’ve been looking for a place where you can be your full self without fearing judgment, NTFT offers exactly that. With the right support, you can learn new skills, heal from past hurts, and build a life that reflects who you truly are.

 FAQs

  • That’s such a real and true concern. So many LGBTQIA+ individuals have had negative experiences within the healthcare system. And what we can promise is that here at North Texas Family Therapy, not only do our clinicians have specific training in this area and are committed to offering safe, affirming care… but they also want to hear what works for you. Therapy is a collaborative space and your voice and needs matter. Many of our clinicians within the practice are also members of the LGBTQIA+ community!

  • Your privacy matters to us, immensely. Everything you share in therapy is confidential and our entire team is dedicated to following ethical guidelines scrupulously. For minors, we work with you to set up confidentiality that feels safe in terms of involving your parents as much as you want or as is clinically appropriate. For adults, nothing you say leaves the therapy room without your consent, unless it has to do with harming yourself or others - which is standard practice for all clinicians.

  • We get it. Life can be so busy and it might be hard to see where this would fit in. We will work with you to find a schedule that fits your needs and is within your budget. We offer a 15-minute free phone consultation so you can share more about what you’re looking for and ask any questions you have before making a commitment. Therapy is an investment in yourself, and that might feel unfamiliar at first, but we are here to make the process as accessible as possible. We have clinicians with rates as low as $30 and have flexibility in all services we provide.
