In the therapy process, I believe clients are the experts of their lives. My role is to listen, observe, and identify patterns of interaction that may be contributing to current struggles. I help to illuminate different perspectives, learn effective communicate skills, and help you advocate and empower yourselves.
I utilize an integrative approach of therapeutic modalities to customize treatment to the needs and goals of each client. No two people are exactly the same and I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Although I use an integrative approach, my practice is rooted in three modalities:
-
- Systems is where you treat the individual in regards to the whole family as well as other outside influences such as school, work, friends, age, sex, culture, religious backgrounds, etc…
- CBT is a combination of behavioral and traditional talk therapy where you identify and reframe automatic negative thinking into positive thoughts, beliefs, and ultimately behaviors.
- Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, while using your body as an anchor to bring awareness with curiosity and kindness, to self and others.
From this base, I assess the presenting problems, struggles, and individual best hopes and plans for successful therapy and implement additional strategies and interventions best suited to your situation.
A few examples: new parents may be struggling with anxiety of bringing a new baby into the home – we will explore their experiences, uncover the root of their concerns, and potentially use CBT to work through their worries. Current members of the military or veterans may be experiencing PTSD; we would use trauma based practices including EMDR to help them get to their level of functioning. A divorced couple may be having problems with their teenager’s behavior; we would identify boundaries to implement and structural interventions to help the parents regain control of the parent-child dyad.
